Greek Tragedy

Mixed Media on Linoleum and Paper - 1985

This painting was huge (8' x 6'). I found some old linoleum from the 1930's in a dumpster in Chinatown in San Francisco. I carried as many pieces of it back to my studio as I possibly could, making several trips before the dumpster was hauled away.

I incorporated pieces of this linoleum into large collage paintings of heads that I was making at the time. It was the Eighties after all, and huge bombastic expressionistic tragedy was de rigueur.

My attempts at this sort of thing never had gravitas and always seemed humorous instead.
