Saguaro After A Monsoon

Flashe on Panel - 2017

In the Sonoran Desert, something that makes plein air painting very fun is the fact that the qualities of the light and heat dry water based paints very quickly.

It is very much like working in wax encaustic.

Although if you tried to paint wax encaustic outdoors here, it would likely melt!

You simply have to make marks without too much thought going into it. You cannot pussyfoot around.

The Tiger, The Drunk, And The Diamond Genie Con Man

Mixed Media on Paper - 1986

A large painting on paper from a long time ago, the neo-expressionist nineteen-eighties.

How can you be a neo-expressionist if you were actually born that way?

This painting looks an awful lot like the pictures I made as a child.

Before I knew what expressionism is or was.

They can't train it out of me.
